"A woman of great sensitivity, finally portrayed in a private setting, away from the spotlight of the social world and politics. With these words, Stefania Rocca describes Edda Mussolini Ciano, the beloved daughter of the leader, which she starred in the TV movie and the Communist Edda Ciano, on Sunday during prime time Raiuno. The drama, based on the book published in 2009 by journalist Marcello Sorgi, is set in 1946 and tells the love between Leonidas and Edda Bongiorno, a former supporter and leader of the Communist Party of Lipari. A passion blossomed a few months after the killing of Father Benito Mussolini and a year from her husband, Galeazzo Ciano: Edda had been exiled from Switzerland, where he had fled with her children, and sentenced to two years of confinement to the islands. A story documented, which will be revived thanks to Rocca, who returns in tv dopo un'assenza dovuta alla nascita del suo secondo figlio, e ad Alessandro Preziosi, nei panni di Leonida. L'attrice torinese, popolarissima anche per aver interpretato la protagonista femminile di Tutti pazzi per amore, è rimasta folgorata dal lato più romantico e sconosciuto della figlia del Duce.
Signora Rocca conosceva già la vicenda?
Sì, avevo letto il libro di Marcello Sorgi e la figura di Edda Ciano, fin da subito, mi aveva interessato e appassionato, prima che mi venisse affidata la parte, avevo già tentato io stessa, senza successo, di acquistare i diritti dell'opera. Poi, la sceneggiatura del film ha confermato la mia prima impressione.
Cosa l'ha colpita di Edda?
Aldilà del personaggio social-politico che tutti in passato hanno descritto, Edda era una donna anticonformista, un po' provocatrice o, come la chiamavano in famiglia, una “cavallina matta”, aveva una grandissima sensibilità. Questo lato emerge con chiarezza nell'appassionata storia d'amore con Leonida: nella fiction, infatti, la figlia del duce viene finalmente ritratta nella sua privacy, lontana dalla politica. Edda è un personaggio complesso, forte, passionale, ma molto fragile.
Difficile interpretare una figura femminile tanto conosciuta e controversa?
Ho letto numerosi libri su di lei e con il regista Graziano Diana, I watched several documentaries, which helped me get into character. When we were on set, though, I tried to give my interpretation of Edda, representing a woman who had the courage to compose himself, to rebuild.
From the film emerges as the image of the daughter of the leader?
is hard to say a priori. I would leave the public with the freedom to form opinions about fiction and Edda. Me, I repeat, is overwhelmingly positive.
This drama marks her return to TV. What are your plans?
I'm considering some proposals, the public will see me again soon ...
